Chapter Thirteen

Addiction

I woke up before her for once. I took a shit... hey, you wanted everything, right? Started the coffee because the robots really suck at making coffee, took a shower, and got dressed. I was just taking my first sip when the doorbell rang. It was Tammy.
“Hi,” she said, “Uh, Destiny invited me over for coffee.”
“Yeah, she told me last night. Come on in. She's still asleep, I'll get you a cup.”
“Thanks.”
“Uh,” I said, handing her a cup, “Destiny says you're a psychologist and a, uh, I forgot what. You're not a whore, you're studying them.”
“Did destiny tell you that?”
“She didn't have to. I ain't went to college but I ain't stupid, I can add two and two and get something between three and five. I got it when she told me you had two doctorates. It was obvious then.”
“Is was?”
“Yeah, I wondered how you got the money for a ticket, but shit, you got two doctorates. You ain't gotta look for work. And I bet you ain't a dropper, neither. You're wearing clothes.”
“No, I'm not a dropper and yes, I'm studying them. Want to know about my studies?”
“Huh? Why would I want to know that much about a bunch of damned whores?”
“Jesus, but you're a dumbass, John. I'm studying drug addiction and prostitution and you have two hundred drug addicted prostitutes on board and you don't have a clue how dangerous they are! Do you want an education, dumbass?”
I felt like a dumbass. “Dangerous? Yeah, I guess it might help.” They never mentioned dangerous when they gave me this damned assignment.
“Here,” she said, giving me a small memory chip.
“What's this?”
“Just read it. Don't worry, I can explain anything you don't understand.”
Shit, I hate reading. That's one thing that me and Destiny are different about, she loves reading. “Well, you had me fooled when I met you,” I said.
She laughed. “I study them, you don't know anything about them at all. Don't let them know they're being studied or the study will be ruined.”
“I'm discreet. I Guess I have some studying to do.”
“It'll save you a whole lot of trouble and just might save your life, and believe me, John, your life is in serious danger. I have some studying to do myself,” Tammy said. “Tell Destiny to drop by when she wakes up, I'll be in the commons.” She left, with her cup of coffee the robots didn't make. Nobody likes that nasty robot coffee.
It was almost eight and Destiny was still asleep. Oh, well. I went to the pilot room like normal, and decided to put inspection off a while, they're not “time-critical” (that's corporate bureaucrat talk) like the eight o'clock readings and adjustments are.
Everything checked out in the pilot room, so I went back to my living room and put the chip in the tablet and started reading. Destiny was still asleep. She was awake about ten minutes later and I drank coffee with her while the robots cooked scrambled eggs and bacon, and we had breakfast before I started reading again. She had her nose in a tablet, too.

After reading for an hour and a half I had to put the tablet down; I was in deep trouble. No wonder they was paying me so good.
Most of these girls were abused and sexually molested as children, and most of them were raised in foster care. Many and maybe most were children of criminal parents; alcoholics, drug abusers, gangsters, thieves, often very violent thieves. They were the kids that society allowed to be ruined for life.
It was sad. Most of them were droppers. There's a chemical name for drops in Tammy's book but I'd have to look it up and I can't pronounce it anyways.
These girls hated sex, their ever having a normal sex life was ruined in their childhoods when they were molested and abused. But drops made the whores enjoy getting fucked. Most of them had never had an enjoyable sexual experience until they put a drop in an eye before work.
There were other psycho-affective effects, and yeah, I had to look that and lots of other shit up when I read that damned book. Her book had a lot of other big words like neurotransmitters and chemical names and names of hormones and stuff and I just kind of glossed over them, I ain't never went to college or nothing.
There was a video of a dropper getting high. At least it was a break in reading. She sat in a chair leaning back, dropped a drop in each eye and dropped the dropper and kind of went limp for a minute. Then groaned, and a few seconds later started rubbing her breasts and crotch. Then she took off her pants and masturbated with a big dildo for a few minutes, had a very loud orgasm, sat there hugging herself for a few more minutes, then picked up the dropper and did it again.
I gathered the whores just stayed really fucked up all the time.
And the drug was highly addictive physically as well as being dangerous in worse ways. It made the user the opposite of pissed off when under the influence. When that was taken away, well... it ain't pretty.
“Damn,” I thought, “Addiction must be a bitch” as I got another cup of coffee.
It seemed I was in for serious trouble. I needed to finish reading that book, but I still had inspections. I’d just inspected the engines and generators last night after Bill had left so it was probably going to be an easy day today.
It was. A different kind of robot was working on engine number forty two than last night so I logged it. I wondered what was wrong with it but hell, I have no idea how those things work. I just follow the checklist like they trained me.
Destiny was eating lunch when I got home. It was late and I was hungry again so I had the robot make me a turkey sandwich. She put on some silly old science fiction movie about time travel. Silly, but enjoyable. We ate cheeseburgers and coleslaw and potato salad for dinner and watched an old two dimensional movie about werewolves that didn't have any colors.
Huh? It was a horror movie, not the least bit believable but still entertaining. It was about a guy who gets bitten by a wolf and turns into one whenever there's a full moon and goes around killing some people and turning others into werewolves. Destiny said they were also called some weird long word I don't remember, I think it starts with an L. Then we watched another old gray horror movie called “Dracula”.
We went to bed early after watching it.
